Description
This early 1950s item is a good luck 'coin' advertising the meat products of the George A. Hormel & Co. The front side has four symbols of good luck (horseshoe, four-leaf clover, star, and wishbone) along the upper edge and features the image of a young lady in a uniform and cap similar to those once worn by flight attendants, below which is the phraseYOUR LUCKY HORMEL GIRL
. In 1949, the Hormel company recruited attractive, musically-talented young ladies to become "Hormel Girls" (eventually numbering 60!), and they traveled the country as musicians, advertising the company's meat products wherever they went - and distributing these good luck items. When they were in public but not performing, they wore uniforms resembling those of flight attendants of that era. This group was disbanded in 1953, dating this 'coin' to 1949-1953. The reverse side has the words
HORMEL GOOD FOOD
plus images of a pig, cow, and sheep.
The 'coin' appears to be composed of brass with a gilt surface treatment (much of which remains), and the diameter i
s approximately 1-1/8" (29 mm)
.
This item is in very good condition, with light wear, toning, and some soiling. Approximately 40-50% of the gilt surface remains, providing a nice light gold color.
